Video Cameras:
We use many types of video cameras in our quest to collect video evidence during a paranormal investigation. High8, Digital 8 and MiniDV video cameras were the norm until recently when we started using HDD digital video cameras. Tape based video cameras are great, but they are a little more labor intensive. Keeping track of tapes, digitizing and the added cost of tapes makes the HDD very appealing. Our group does use tape systems but very rarely. With the HDD camera the down load takes only a few minutes and then we store the mpegs on a 1 Tara bite external hard drive for easy access and storage.
We have stayed with the Sony brand of camcorders as they are the only ones available with Night Shot or Super Night Shot for shooting video in total darkness. Total darkness or 0-lux does not mean you don't need some form of illumination. A good IR illuminator is a great add and helps light up an area for the camera.
Our mainstays are the Sony HDR-SR1 and the Sony DCR-SR62. We have a light bar that we attach the camera and a Sony HVL-IRM IR light, and a ECM-MSD1 stereo microphone are placed on it. The Sony HVL-HIRL IR light is then attached to the camera. The combination of the internal IR light and the two add on lights will make you think you are walking around in the daylight.
As with all of all of our cameras, there is no nebulas theory behind their use. With visible light, if you can see it you can videotape it. If your camera is IR capable, use external IR light's and you can capture it on video.
